Publication A Study of Financial Behavior Among Urban Older Chinese(The Malaysian Association of Consumer and Family Economics, 2023-06-01) ;Shyue Chuan Chong ;Zun Khan Andaeus Neoh; ;Diep Thanh TungOlder Malaysian Chinese has one of the highest mean incomes among the other ethnicity in Malaysia. As these individuals grow older, their savings and retirement fund will dwindle and are insufficient for their spending. As a result, these individuals will seek to earn extra income from investment so that they could save more for their children and lifetime care. However, investment is subject to risk. Thus, this study examines the effect of gender, age, financial satisfaction, financial knowledge, and bequest motives on older Malaysian Chinese financial risk tolerance. In this study, the target sample was those Chinese aged 50 or older residing in Selangor, Malaysia. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with the purposive sampling method. As a result, the survey covered a sample of 263 completed cases. The multiple regression analysis shows that males with optimal financial knowledge, altruistic personality (unselfish and concern for other people), and variables positively influence older Malaysian Chinese’s financial risk tolerance (risk-taker). At the same time, ages and financial satisfaction variables are negative and significantly influence financial risk tolerance (risk- averse). Lastly, these findings may contribute to the relevant authority, such as retirement fund providers, to formulate a proper long-term plan to ensure Chinese older Malaysians’ individual and family financial stress during retirement.Publication Banking in the metaverse: a new frontier for financial institutions(Emerald, 2023-09-25) ;Keng-Boon Ooi ;Garry Wei-Han Tan ;Eugene Cheng-Xi Aw; ;Yogesh K. Dwivedi ;Rohita Dwivedi ;Laurie Hughes ;Arpan Kumar Kar; ;Emmanuel Mogaji ;Ian PhauAnshuman SharmaTechnological advancements have catalyzed disruption in the banking sector. The impact of the metaverse on the banking sector is no exception. In view of this, the current paper aims to provide valuable insights into four key areas (i.e. corporate banking, retail banking, banking employees and public policy) that the metaverse could significantly disrupt. Insights into four key areas of the banking sector that the metaverse could significantly impact were gathered from various invited contributors. The invited contributors first introduce the association between their respective key areas with the metaverse. Subsequently, the opportunities and challenges relevant to the key areas were identified. Finally, future research agendas were proposed for the attention of all relevant stakeholders. The metaverse's impact on key areas of the banking sector is discussed in this paper. Following the metaverse's potentially wide application in the banking sector, insights from the invited contributions offer great value to the relevant stakeholders.Publication Case Study of Workplace Spirituality on Organizational Commitments among University Members in Malaysia(Readers Insight Publisher, 2019-03-21); ;Chan Ling-Meng ;Mathivannan JaganathanBased on the recent past studies (Ahmad & Omar, 2015; Ke & Deng, 2018; Ghani, Abdullah & Allah, 2018), there are an increasing attention from the researchers to examine the workplace spirituality in the organization. This research study seeked to study the influences of workplace spirituality (Allen & Meyer , 2000) on organizational commitments among university members in Malaysia. Data of 240 responses were collected and analyzed via partial least square structural equation modelling to examine both the measurement and structural model. It is significantly accentuated that workplace spirituality influences the three dimensions of organizational commitment. From this empirical findings, it strongly suggested that the university shold find ways to embded this workplace spirityality into university members’ performance in order to enhance the loyalty and employee engagement with the university (Alas & Mousa, 2016).Publication Counteracting the Impact of Online Fake News on Brands(Informa UK Limited, 2023-03-28); ;Boon-Liat Cheng ;Eugene Cheng-Xi Aw ;Garry Wei-Han Tan; Keng-Boon OoiPublication CURRENCY CRISES AND CONTAGION CHANNELS IN ASIAN ECONOMIES(Bank Indonesia, Central Banking Research Department - Digital Commons, 2023-01-20); This study examines multiple transmission mechanisms that propagate and amplify shocks across Asian nations owing to financial turbulence with emphasis on global shock transmission between economies that prioritise ‘trade’ and ‘financial’ connections in four countries: Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Based on the logit estimation outcomes, a higher degree of trade openness amplifies the implications of shocks on the economy. Relevant implications are drawn for optimal regional monitoring and the coordination of integration as the economic fundamentals associated with the currency crises complements the first-generation models of speculative attacks.Publication Exchange market pressure in a small Pacific Island country: a study of Fiji: 1975‐2005Purpose Under the fixed exchange rate regime Fiji's currency, which is pegged to a basket of currencies of its major trading partners, has been experiencing severe pressures. The purpose of this paper is to study annual exchange market pressure (EMP) over a 31‐year (1975‐2005) period and attempt to determine the factors behind EMP. Design/methodology/approach The paper employs the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing procedure, which is applied to a multivariate model covering four variables, namely EMP in index numbers, and budget deficit, domestic credit to private sector and external debt, all the three expressed as percentages of gross domestic product. Additionally, an uncertainty variable is added to the regression analysis with a view to finding out whether political uncertainty has been responsible for speculative attacks on currency. Existence of a cointegration vector is then investigated. It is then followed by Granger‐causality tests in an error‐correction model with view to exploring the short‐ and long‐term relationships between the variables. Findings The study findings are: there existed a long‐run relationship between EMP and budget deficit, domestic credit to private sector, external debt and political uncertainty; and EMP was positively related to budget deficit, domestic credit to private sector and external debt as well as speculative pressures exercised by political uncertainty. Originality/value The empirical study on EMP in the South Pacific Island countries and in Fiji in particular is the first of its kind. The paper is expected to promote further interest in the studies of currencies of small island countries.
